Numerical implementation of BBM in FE package for solving unsaturated soil boundary value problems

Unsaturated soil mechanics is of keen relevance when dealing with above the water table orcompacted soils. Barcelona Basic Model (BBM) one most widely used constitutive models for describing unsaturated behaviour and available as a model in software like PLAXIS CODE_BRIGHT (developed by UPC). The present study demonstrates numerical framework to implement BBM within ABAQUS package user-defined using user subroutine called UMAT (User Material). backward Euler integration scheme coupled Newton Raphson iterative algorithm construct model. A convergence test conducted check accuracy stability integration. UMAT's inability manage pore pressure led proxy diffusion depict suction variation. heat equation three-dimensional space time. Anoedometer simulated which allowed consolidate then set saturate at constant vertical stress, leads wetting collapse. results demonstrate reasonable wettinginduced compression subjected loading varying saturation level.
